A mechanical engineer phone screen starts by deciding which of three jobs the role is: product design, building systems (HVAC and plumbing design for buildings), or manufacturing and process engineering. Then test the tools and methods that job uses daily: CAD and tolerancing for design, load calculations and codes for building systems, yield and root cause for manufacturing. Ask for one project the candidate personally took from requirement to release, and whether a PE license matters for the client at all.

Licensure, only where it applies
NCEES offers the PE Mechanical exam in three versions: HVAC and Refrigeration, Machine Design and Materials, and Thermal and Fluid Systems (as of September 2026). Licenses themselves are issued by state boards. Some states exempt certain engineering done by employees of private companies; Texas, for example, has a limited exemption in Occupations Code section 1001.057 for modifications to a company's own non-public buildings and facilities. Exemptions differ by state and are narrower than people assume, so do not decide for the client whether a PE is needed. Ask them.
If the client needs a PE: record the states, license numbers and expiry dates, and check each on the board's public lookup. If the client wants one within a set time: ask whether the FE is passed and how many years of qualifying experience the candidate has under a licensed engineer.

- Strong answer: the requirement, concepts considered, material and process choice, analysis or hand calculations, prototype and test, drawing release and the change that came after.
- Red flags: starts at "I modeled it" and ends at "I sent it to the drafter."

"Tell me about a tolerance stack-up you did. What drove it?"
- Strong answer: the fit or function, worst case or statistical method, the tolerances they changed, and how they applied GD&T to the drawing.
- Red flags: cannot describe a stack-up, for a design role with tight assemblies. "The default tolerance block."

- Strong answer: hand calculations to check the FEA, boundary conditions they chose and why, a test that agreed or disagreed, what they changed.

Engineers who move from manufacturing into design, or from product work into building systems, often accept a step back in title for the change. Ask whether that is true for this candidate before you assume the client's level is a problem.
How mechanical engineering experience gets overstated
- CAD user as design engineer. Modeling from someone else's sketch is drafting.
- "FEA experience" from coursework. Ask what they analyzed at work and how they checked it.
- Team projects as personal ownership. Ask what part of the product was theirs.
- Exam passed as license held. Check the board.
- Certificates as capability. Software certifications such as the CSWP, or an ASME GD&T certification, show study, not a released design. Useful, not decisive.
- Improvements without numbers. Manufacturing results should come with a before and after.

Before you submit a mechanical engineer
- Role type confirmed and matched: design, building systems or manufacturing.
- One project from requirement to release or result, with their personal scope.
- Tools and how much they use them now.
- Licensure status, if the client requires it, checked on the board.
- Quality system or regulated industry exposure, if relevant.
- On-site, travel and compensation expectations.
- Consent to submit for this client and role, with the date.

Does a mechanical engineer need a PE license?
It depends on the work and the state. Engineers who design building systems for consulting firms and seal drawings generally need a PE in the project's state. Many product and manufacturing engineers work without one, because some states exempt certain work done by employees of private companies for their own facilities or products. The scope of those exemptions varies, so let the client's requirement decide.
Which PE exam do mechanical engineers take?
NCEES offers the PE Mechanical exam in three versions: HVAC and Refrigeration, Machine Design and Materials, and Thermal and Fluid Systems. A building systems engineer usually takes HVAC and Refrigeration.
How do I test CAD skill on a phone screen?
Ask for the last part or assembly they modeled: the software, the number of parts, how they handled configurations or design tables, and how drawings were released. Then ask about a tolerance stack-up. People who model daily describe workflow; people who used CAD in school describe features.
Are mechanical engineers in manufacturing and design screened the same way?
No. Design engineers are judged on modeling, analysis, tolerancing and testing a product. Manufacturing and process engineers are judged on yield, cycle time, fixtures, root cause analysis and launching production. Ask which one the role is before the call.
